{"id":2168,"date":"2025-06-22T13:06:57","date_gmt":"2025-06-22T20:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/?p=2168"},"modified":"2025-07-18T14:25:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T21:25:07","slug":"turkey-june-22nd-sultanahmet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/?p=2168","title":{"rendered":"Turkey, June 22: Sultanahmet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I arrived in Istanbul on Saturday evening, and my client meeting wasn&#8217;t until Monday, so I had all day Sunday to explore the city.\u00a0 I had also allowed two more days for potential followup meetings, and my flight left on Thursday morning.\u00a0 Did I spend Tuesday and Wednesday in a nuclear pharmacy?\u00a0 Stay tuned&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But for Sunday, I knew the big tourist sites were going to get crowded, so I needed to get moving early, and pick one site to do first before the crowds arrived.\u00a0 And there was really only one possible choice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_083529-Medium-e1751231236397.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2169 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_083529-Medium-e1751231236397.jpg\" alt=\"The Hagia Sophia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_083529-Medium-e1751231236397.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_083529-Medium-e1751231236397-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_083529-Medium-e1751231236397-768x404.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_083529-Medium-e1751231236397-500x263.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Hagia Sophia was built by the emperor Justinian I in the 530s.\u00a0 Although it is currently used as a mosque, the building predates Islam itself.\u00a0 It&#8217;s coming up on fifteen\u00a0<em>hundred<\/em> years old.<\/p>\n<p>And they just let you go in and walk around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090548-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2170\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090548-Medium.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of the Hagia Sophia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090548-Medium.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090548-Medium-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090548-Medium-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090548-Medium-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now to be clear, they don&#8217;t let you walk\u00a0<em>everywhere.<\/em> Quick history of the building: It was a Catholic church for the first 500 years of it&#8217;s existence until the Great Schism separated the Eastern Orthodox faith from Catholicism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091858-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2171\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091858-Medium.jpg\" alt=\"Byzantine mural\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091858-Medium.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091858-Medium-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091858-Medium-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091858-Medium-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It remained Orthodox from then until the Fourth Crusade showed up to steal the bronze horses and otherwise generally pillage stuff. Back to Catholicism for a bit until the Byzantines managed to retake the city. However, they couldn&#8217;t hold on to it, and when the empire was defeated by the Ottomans in 1453, the Hagia Sophia became a mosque.<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, this transformation required putting the\u00a0<em>mihrab<\/em>, or prayer alcove, off-center, since Istanbul is close enough to the holy lands that Jerusalem and Mecca have a detectable difference in direction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090803-Medium-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2172\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090803-Medium-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"Mihrab in Hagia Sophia\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090803-Medium-rotated.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_090803-Medium-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building remained a mosque until 1935, when it became a museum.\u00a0 It was converted BACK to a mosque in 2018.\u00a0 This latest transformation is a bit of a bummer from a tourist perspective, since it means we are confined to the second floor balcony.<\/p>\n<p>But the second floor balcony is HUGE, and we still get to walk around this\u00a0<em>fifteen hundred<\/em> year old building.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091319-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2173\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091319-Medium.jpg\" alt=\"Hagia Sophia balcony\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091319-Medium.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091319-Medium-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091319-Medium-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_091319-Medium-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Truly a stunningly memorable experience.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the mosque, I walked down the street to the museum that was included in my ticket.\u00a0 That was&#8230; less stunning.\u00a0 The second floor had some nice historical artifacts, like this golden arm.\u00a0 (Eat your heart out, Frank Sinatra.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_104241-Medium-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2174\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_104241-Medium-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"Golden Arm\" width=\"392\" height=\"520\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But to get to them, we first had to walk through a goofy-ass multimedia presentation on the third floor.\u00a0 Every room had a projection and &#8220;exciting&#8221; Coffee time.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_122710-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2178\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_122710-Medium.jpg\" alt=\"Turkish Coffee\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_122710-Medium.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_122710-Medium-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_122710-Medium-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_122710-Medium-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI&#8217;m not coming to Istanbul and NOT getting Turkish coffee, and this place seemed pretty nice &#8211; it was down the end of a long stone walkthrough.\u00a0 The container in the middle held Turkish Delight (although NOT served by a pale woman in a sled), and the cup on the right is sherbet, which is NOT an ice cream in this part of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Went back to the square, ticked off some simple pictures for Geocaching, and then I decided it WAS time for lunch.\u00a0 I found some great reviews of a nice place nearby, but when I got there, it was closed for a private function.\u00a0 One street over, however, I found a perfectly nice fish restaurant, so I got a fish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133240-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2179\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133240-Medium.jpg\" alt=\"Fish\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133240-Medium.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133240-Medium-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133240-Medium-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133240-Medium-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I also got an audience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133453-Medium-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2180\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_133453-Medium-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"Cat\" width=\"343\" height=\"455\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This little beggar sat there the ENTIRE duration of my lunch hoping I would trip and feed them. I did not.<\/p>\n<p>Coming back up to the main square again, there were a few possibilities for other major attractions, (such as the Basilica Cistern and the Topkapi palace) but, as expected, they had all gotten <em>super<\/em> crowded.\u00a0 Instead, I went to the quite interesting Archaeology museum.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an exhibit showing the various layers of Troy, with artifacts extracted from each one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_153915-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2181\" don&#8217;t.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_151711-Medium-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2183\" so I started walking back towards the Golden Horn in hopes of visiting the spice bazaar and then going and finding some food.<\/p>\n<p>The spice bazaar is a large enclosed shopping structure.\u00a0 The building is fascinating and historic, but as far as I can tell, the vendors are effectively a) all identical and b) all crap.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_165709-Medium-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2184\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250622_165709-Medium-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"Spice Bazaar\" width=\"392\" height=\"520\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a little pet and garden area tucked in to one corner of the exterior.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fun seeing pet food sold in exactly the same way as sumac powder.<\/p>\n<p><a Karak\u00f6y.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>What was so excellent about it?\u00a0 Well, THIS was my view during dinner.<br \/>\n<a
