{"id":1739,"date":"2023-08-23T09:56:52","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T16:56:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/?p=1739"},"modified":"2023-09-09T10:43:47","modified_gmt":"2023-09-09T17:43:47","slug":"japan-day-9-tokyo-ghibli-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/?p=1739","title":{"rendered":"Japan, Day 9: Tokyo &#8211; Ghibli Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I mentioned in the planning post that we had schemed to acquire tickets to the Studio Ghibli museum.\u00a0 And by &#8220;schemed&#8221; I mean &#8220;set an alarm on my phone two months ahead of time.&#8221;\u00a0 Tickets for the museum go on sale once a month, and they sell out within an hour or so.\u00a0 Incidentally, if you&#8217;re not sure what Studio Ghibli IS, they&#8217;re an animation company that has made a bunch of really incredible films that you owe it to yourself to watch.\u00a0 Maybe don&#8217;t start with &#8220;Grave of the Fireflies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The museum is out in a suburb called Mitaka, which also contains a cat \/ capybara caf\u00e9.\u00a0 We never ended up going to that one, because we couldn&#8217;t figure out how to make the online reservation system work.\u00a0 Among other things, you have to enter the pronunciation of your name <em>in katakana,<\/em> which proved to be challenging.<\/p>\n<p>Does this mean we didn&#8217;t see a capybara today?\u00a0 It does not!\u00a0 The Ghibli museum is in a medium sized park, which also contains a small satellite zoo to the Tokyo Zoo.\u00a0 \u00a0I&#8217;m willing to bet that after the construction of the museum, something like half their traffic on weekdays became tourists, like us, waiting for their admission time.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, I thought it would be entertaining to take selfies with a bunch of the animals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/animals.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1740\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/animals-1024x608.jpg\" alt=\"Selfies with animals\" width=\"584\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/animals-1024x608.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/animals-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/animals-768x456.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/animals-500x297.jpg 500w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/animals.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This should give you an idea of the type of zoo we&#8217;re talking about.\u00a0 It has an entire enclosure where visitors can walk around and get an up close and personal view of&#8230; squirrels.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s the aforementioned capybara.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-08-23-10.39.18-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1741\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-08-23-10.39.18-copy-1024x970.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-08-23-10.39.18-copy-1024x970.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-08-23-10.39.18-copy-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-08-23-10.39.18-copy-768x728.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-08-23-10.39.18-copy-317x300.jpg 317w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-08-23-10.39.18-copy.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But with that, it was time to go to the museum!\u00a0 It&#8217;s an amazingly whimsical building.\u00a0 Random spiral staircases.\u00a0 Balconies with tiny doors. Bridges over courtyards. SO MUCH WHIMSY.\u00a0 Are you not bemused?\u00a0 Sadly, it does not allow interior photographs. But here&#8217;s the box office attendant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_113007_cropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1742\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_113007_cropped-732x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Totoro at Ghibli museum\" width=\"584\" height=\"817\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_113007_cropped-732x1024.jpg 732w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_113007_cropped-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_113007_cropped-768x1074.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_113007_cropped.jpg 858w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Given that ticket sales are online-only, I suspect there&#8217;s some boredom at play here.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to exploring the space, there&#8217;s amazing exhibits about Ghibli&#8217;s animation specifically, and animation processes generally. There was a temporary exhibit about Miyazaki&#8217;s one TV show, &#8220;Future Boy Conan,&#8221; which we&#8217;d never seen but now kind of want to.\u00a0 I also had a pork cutlet sandwich at the caf\u00e9 with a potentially inappropriate decoration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_122647-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1743\" src=\"https:\/\/fnerk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/20230823_122647-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Pork cutlet sandwich with biplane flag.\" width=\"311\" height=\"548\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIYKYK.<\/p>\n<p>On our way back to the train station, we stopped by the capybara caf\u00e9 again to confirm they didn&#8217;t have any slots available.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t, but we did get to see the capybara through the door, so that&#8217;s cool.
